Interest in drugs like Ozempic® and Wegovy® has surged due to their effectiveness in weight loss. However, emerging research suggests that their benefits extend beyond just shedding pounds. According to vascular neurologist Pierre Fayad, MD, these medications, known as GLP-1 agonists, have shown promising results in the treatment of diabetes, as well as in reducing the risk of heart disease and stroke.
While obesity is not directly associated with stroke risk, it does increase the chances of developing conditions such as diabetes and hypertension. Dr. Fayad explains that GLP-1 agonists, such as semaglutide found in Ozempic® and Wegovy®, not only help with weight loss but also improve insulin resistance, prevent diabetes, and lower the risk of heart disease and stroke. Recent studies have shown that participants taking semaglutide experienced a 20% decrease in cardiovascular events. Similar benefits were observed in individuals with diabetes, demonstrating a lower risk of nonfatal stroke.
However, Dr. Fayad reminds us that there are still side effects and costs associated with these medications. The exact mechanism by which semaglutide reduces stroke risk is not yet fully understood. Despite the potential benefits of medication, it is crucial to focus on adopting healthy lifestyle choices to mitigate the risk of stroke and other health issues.
Dr. Fayad emphasizes the importance of:
1. Lowering cholesterol levels through a healthy diet and exercise.
2. Managing blood pressure, with a target of 120/85 mm Hg.
3. Avoiding or managing diabetes, keeping HbA1C levels under 7%.
4. Maintaining a healthy diet, including reducing salt intake to lower blood pressure.
5. Quitting smoking and avoiding street drugs.
6. Limiting alcohol consumption to moderate levels.
7. Regular exercise, following the CDC’s recommendations.
8. Maintaining a healthy weight.
9. Taking charge of your health by monitoring key indicators and working with healthcare providers.
While medications like Ozempic® and Wegovy® offer hope in reducing weight and improving health outcomes, it is important to remember that they are not a substitute for a healthy lifestyle. By following these guidelines and working closely with healthcare providers, individuals can have a comprehensive approach to managing their stroke risk and overall wellbeing.
